Trigger point therapy involves the doctor using his or her hands to break up the “knots” in your muscles that have resulted from improper biomechanics. When a joint has restricted mobility, it can interfere with the messages being sent by the nerves to the muscles. This often leads to focal areas of spasm within the muscles which are often referred to as “trigger points” or “pressure points”. The objective of trigger point therapy is to relax the muscle fibers and relieve the congestion in the effected areas. As a result, the decrease in muscle tension can allow for better movement of the joint and better circulation to the muscle tissues.
