Bone Broth for Bone Health (and More!)

Bone broth has been used for decades as a food based way to help heal the gut and reduce joint pain and inflammation throughout the body. The dense, nutrient rich liquid is a delicious and economic way to get the most out of your food.

Beef Bone Broth Recipe
Total Time: 48 hours
Serves: Varies
4 pounds beef bones with marrow
4 carrots, chopped
4 celery stalks, chopped
2 medium onions, peel on, sliced in half lengthwise and quartered
4 garlic cloves, peel on and smashed
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon whole peppercorns
2 bay leaves
3 sprigs fresh thyme
5-6 sprigs parsley
1/4 cup ACV
18-20 cups cold water


Place all ingredients in a 10 quart capacity crock-pot.
Add in water.
Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce and simmer gently, skimming the fat that rises to the surface occasionally.
Simmer for 24-48 hours.
Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
Discard solids and strain remainder in a bowl through a colander. Let stock cool to room temperature, cover and chill.
Use within a week or freeze up to 3 months.

The science of Nutrition is a complex, fascinating, and developing area of study. As a population, we are making it more and more complicated on a daily basis. Here are 4 factors that have an impact on an individual’s nutritional status:

  1. We are living longer and taking more medications, yet our general nutritional status is declining rapidly. The evolving world of pharmacology is on the rise and it’s an area of study that pushes the limits and, unfortunately, leaves a lot of questions unanswered. For example: it takes on average 12 years to develop a new drug and have it ready on the market for physician’s to prescribe. Yes, medications are a scientific miracle that often allow the human race to function for longer; however, we do not know the long term effects since studies are not required to be conducted long enough to find out  AND medications do not provide nutritional value, but instead often lead to nutritional deficiencies as a result of the sometimes unavoidable side effects. The more medications a person takes, the more complicated their nutritional status becomes…
  2. One of the most frustrating factors for the general population is the lack of nutrients in today’s food. Sadly, our vegetables today do not have the same nutritional value as our vegetables 75 years ago. This is a result of poor farming practices that result in faster production, but less time for mineral restoration. Additionally, the significant amount of genetic modifications that our country allows can result in not only nutrient-deficient foods, but also foods that may contain toxic chemicals to the human body. When our food doesn’t contain the nutrients it once did, where do we get it from?
  3. The misinformation of the media is one of the greatest challenges we have as health care providers. One day you may hear that a
    vitamin is the best thing for you, then, you may hear that same vitamin may be harmful. Unfortunately, the health-related information provided by the media is usually incomplete and inaccurate. It is very important to keep in mind that the people behind the media articles about nutrition often have no clinical experience or any experience in the healthcare field. Yahoo news, for example, should not be a source of nutritional information. We recommend that do your own research. Visit and validate the sources of information, read how the study was performed, and don’t hesitate to ask your health care professionals for their opinion. We are educated to work through the media mumbo-jumbo and find the facts.
  4. Society’s obsession with the quick fix… this is where we complicate it for ourselves! Who doesn’t want a magic pill to fix all of our health problems? Unfortunately, that doesn’t exist. Reaching health driven goals requires an individual to work hard and make tough decisions. We often need to ask our friends and loved ones for support since they can frequently sabotage our efforts. Making changes requires a mindset that will be strong, even in the most difficult times. Chiropractic and Massage: A Perfect Match

canstockphoto4331506What chiropractic care is for the joints, massage therapy is to the muscles. Regular adjustments help to keep the structure of the body in place and to free restrictions. But what do you do if the restrictions are cause by the muscles constantly pulling things out of alignment? We’ve all been there. We’ve all felt like we were hunched over from being on a computer all day or gotten off of a long trip on an air plane and maintained that level of stiffness and discomfort for a few days. Now, take a moment and envision how your posture ways when you were all stiff and tightened. I can guarantee that you were not as straight or moving as freely as you would like.

When muscles become tight, they lose their ability to move as freely or stretch as long as they should, resulting in a tense, and shortened state for that muscle or muscled group. However, that muscle is still attached in one way or another to the skeletal structure. This tension results in discomfort and often misalignment as the structure is pulled by the tension of the muscle fibers.

This is where massage and bodywork play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s function. If a muscle remains tightened, then the joints stand no chance in being able to perform their best. It also makes it so that chiropractic adjustments become undone quicker. Massage can help restore balance to the muscles and retrain the body to relax. So, massage doesn’t just feel good at the time, it actually helps you to feel better and your body perform better over time.

October: National Chiropractic Health Month



At Body Logic we find it quite appropriate that the “big move” is occurring during National Chiropractic Health Month! In honor of celebrating the great results chiropractic care can provide, below are a few specifically selected facts provided by the American Chiropractic Association. We love what we do and want you to know why!


  • Chiropractic outperformed all other back pain treatments, including prescription medication, yoga, pilates, and over-the-counter medication therapies.
  • Doctors of Chiropractic are the highest rated healthcare practitioners for low-back pain treatment above physical therapists (PTs), specialist physicians/MDs (ex: neurosurgeons, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons), and primary care physicians/MDs (ex: family or internal medicine).
  • With prescription drug abuse now classified as an epidemic in the United States and the number of spinal fusions soaring 500% over the last decade, the essential services provided by Doctors of Chiropractic represent a primary care approach for the prevention, diagnosis, and conservative management of back pain and spinal disorders that can often enable patients to reduce or avoid the need for these riskier treatments.
  • A systematic review in 2010 found that most studies suggest spinal manipulation achieves equal or superior improvement in pain and function when compared with other commonly used interventions for short, intermediate, and long-term follow-up.
  • The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society jointly recommended in 2007 that clinicians consider spinal manipulation for patients who do not improve with self-care options.
  • The likelihood of surgery for workers with back injuries when the first point of contact is a surgeon/MD is 42.7% whereas when the first point of contact is a chiropractic physician/DC is only 1.5%.



  • There are 77,000 Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) in the United States who are required to pass a series of four national board exams and be state licensed.  Roughly another 3,000 DCs work in academic and management roles.
  • It is estimated that Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) treat over 27 million Americans (adult and children) annually.
  • Doctors of Chiropractic are educated in nationally accredited, four-year doctoral graduate school programs though a curriculum that includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical internship, with an average DC program equivalent in classroom hours to allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) medical schools.
  • Doctors of Chiropractic are designated as physician-level providers in the vast majority of states and the federal Medicare program.
