Chiropractic Changes Are Coming!

Dear Body Logic Patron,

As Body Logic enters its 9th year providing chiropractic care to the Virginia Beach Community, we recognize the need to change our rates for the first time since I started the practice in 2009. As many of you have seen, there have been a lot of changes to Body Logic over the last several years to provide better service and experience, including:

• Hired high-quality doctors to increase appointment availability
• Hired high-quality administrative staff to improve office flow and management
• New office location to improve customer comfort, increase availability of quality products and services, and provide community wellness education classes
• Provide training for staff to continue growing and improving to better serve you

As always, we strive to provide exemplary chiropractic care through longer patient visits allowing for more hands-on time with the doctors compared to other offices in the area. We do not want to sacrifice that time to simply fit in more appointments. Adapting our prices will allow Body Logic to continue to thrive and provide the same level of care while supporting our office and staff with competitive pay. We have reviewed inflation rates to determine our fee schedule changes. There has been a 15.8% increase in inflation rate over the last 9 years according to the US Department of Labor.  We have elected to increase our adjustment appointment rates by 12%, while choosing to reduce other fees to maintain affordability. To remain transparent, you will find a breakdown of costs below for patients that pay for their treatment directly to our office. Please note, some of these costs apply to patients that submit to insurance yet do not have coverage for all services rendered. We will be implementing our new fee schedule effective May 1, 2018. Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Massage for Exercise

Are you new to the exercise world? Are you a regular at the gym? Or are you an accomplished marathon runner? It doesn’t matter which category you fall under, you all have something in common… you need a massage! There are many benefits that come from exercise including improved circulation, increased strength and endurance, and weight loss or health maintenance. Those benefits are accompanied with the expected aches and pains that come with challenging the body. Massage can enhance the benefits while decreasing the soreness.

When we challenge muscle through cardiovascular exercise or weight-lifting, we actually breakdown the muscle tissue on a microscopic level. As the muscle heals, it builds stronger and bigger muscle fibers if enough protein is available. (NOTE: protein is essential in the diet to provide the building blocks for muscle development). The initial breakdown of the muscle tissue and the toxins released in the process can leave us feeling sore. Massage can help loosen up the muscles, flush out the toxins, and help us recover faster from exercise. If you have long-term goals like running your first 5K or qualifying for the Boston Marathon, incorporating regular massage into your schedule can help you achieve your goals with less pain along the way!

We often recommend exercise to improve circulation and mobility, but it can also make our muscles feel tighter. Developing increased muscle tone is important for building strength and supporting proper posture. If you’re new to exercise, you can become frustrated by this new “tight” feeling because it can initially limit your range of motion and seemingly reduce your flexibility. Although massage doesn’t replace stretching, it can certainly help prevent the additional stiffness and tightness that results from exercise. If you are a competitive athlete or just stepping up your exercise game, our sports massage might be the best choice for you since it incorporates stretching during your session.

Keeping up with an exercise regimen can be challenging and stressful on your daily schedule. Luckily, exercise that lasts greater than 20-30 minutes has the magical ability to release endorphins within the body. Endorphins are the hormones that are released from within the brain and nervous system, and they activate the body’s opiate receptors which provide a “feel good effect.” This is helpful to keep you motivated to workout… you are not only proud of yourself for getting to the gym before or after work, but you are also happier! Interestingly, massage has the ability to release endorphins too, which is another way it helps manage the muscle soreness associated with exercise. Enjoy the mental and physical rewards of your hard work and schedule a massage today!

Allergy Season- Eating for Success

Spring time is upon us… the yellow-green pollen is now covering… everything! If you’re like most of Virginia Beach residents, you’re probably experiencing the morning sneezes, the watery eyes, or that frustrating tickle that sits in the back of your throat. Besides loading up on allergy meds, is there anything you can do to help battle the annoying symptoms of allergies? There is! Your food choices can impact the severity of your symptoms. It all comes down to inflammation.

When the body encounters a foreign substance, like pollen, and the body finds it offensive, the immune system turns on. If you’re prone to allergies, the body overreacts when exposed resulting in those pesky allergy symptoms. It is normal for inflammation to increase when the immune system is engaged. White blood cells are mobilized, histamine is released, and the body tries to attack the allergens. As a result, mucosal surfaces on the inside of the nose, throat, around the eyes and into the lungs become stimulated and swollen. For some people this can be a very minor reaction, while for others the reaction can be much worse, even debilitating. Nutritionally speaking, an anti-inflammatory diet can be a helpful tool to lessening allergy symptoms, or at least prevent them from being worse!

An anti-inflammatory menu
1. Apples, onions, berries, cabbage, and broccoli contain a flavonoid called Quercetin. Quercetin reduces inflammation. Luckily, those foods often contain other anti-inflammatory properties like anti-oxidants.
2. Oranges, red peppers, and strawberries contain high levels of Vitamin C, which is thought to help control allergy symptoms due to its anti-oxidant properties. Other citrus fruits, like grapefruit, are also good options.
3. Wild Caught Fish- Mackerel, salmon, trout, tuna, and bluefish are all great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, that are naturally anti-inflammatory and have anti-allergic properties that can actually decrease the allergic reaction.
4. Tree nuts- Walnuts, almonds, and flax seeds are examples of tree nuts that also contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds also contain selenium, which also has some anti-allergic properties.
5. Tea, especially green tea, contains anti-histamine properties. You can help prevent morning sneezing by starting your day with some hot tea!
6. Fermented foods like kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut are great for intestinal health and have natural anti-inflammatory properties as well. With 70-80% of your immune system residing in your gut, it’s important to keep the inflammation down.

Other food for thought
Local honey has been shown to help with seasonal allergies. If you eat local honey early in the season, your body will be exposed to the local pollen. Similar to allergy shots, it is thought that over time you will become less sensitive to the pollen and, therefore, your allergy symptoms will reduce. Check out this link for farms in our area that may carry local honey!

Oils for Spring!

April and May are some fun times to try new oils or even better some other doTERRA products that can offer natural swaps for everyday items you may already be using.

Earth day is an excellent time to look at what household products you utilize that may not be friendly to this planet we call home. doTERRA has a great all-purpose cleaner.  The OnGuard concentrated cleaner is 12 ounces of power packed goodness. It contains oils from OnGuard: Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. In addition it has plant-based surfactants to help improve the cleaning process and it is safe for our planet and for your family!  What more could we ask for in one little bottle?!

Cinco de Mayo is a great day to pull out the Lime essential oil. Diffusing 5-7 drops of lime with a drop of a Ylang Ylang or another sweet-smelling flower will remind you of a tasty, refreshing margarita. Make some guacamole with 2-3 ripe avocados, 1/4 cup diced red onion, 1/4 cup chopped tomato, chopped parsley or cilantro to taste, 8-10 drops doTERRA Lime essential oil, salt and pepper to taste. Mix it together and you have a delicious tasty guac for the holiday! It is a great oil to keep around for it’s emotionally uplifting properties.  So when you need a lift, just breathe in a strong whiff- of Lime!

Let’s think a little ahead to May 13th and be prepared for the holiday that honors mothers. Here are some quick gift suggestions that might assist in the celebration.  doTERRA offers a Spa Luxury Kit that contains: Detoxifying Mud Mask, Exfoliating Body Scrub and Replenishing Body Butter. You can give numerous spa experiences for $56! If you have some “littles” that want to love on Mom, but the spa kit is financially out of reach, a delightful doTERRA lip balm might do the trick. It comes in three scents: Spearmint, Marjoram, and Lemon Verbena. Since Mother’s Day is early in the month of May you’ll either want to get in on our April mid-month order or order online here.  Your foresight will be beneficial to all!

Enjoy these new ways to work essential oils into your daily life!
