Healthy Kids and Healthy Spines

In Virginia Beach, there are a wide-range of scenarios our young families are facing as we embark on a new school year.  Regardless of the scenario your family faces, we want to educate you about ways you can support your child’s health through the spine.  It truly is the backbone of the body- providing structural support and housing the nervous system.  Keeping a healthy spine supports a healthy body, something we’re all striving for more than ever before!

Minimize screen time!

Although a funny term, did you know “text neck” is a real thing?!  Check out this graphic and see how even the slightest flexion of the neck can challenge the body.  Whether working on a Chromebook or looking at a phone, prolonged cervical flexion is not healthy for the spine.  Encourage taking breaks from the screen as frequently as possible (every 20 minutes for our young children).  The break should include getting out of the chair, stretching arms overhead and looking up at the sky, and taking 3-5 deep breaths.  Walking around for 5 minutes helps increase blood flow and wake the body up for more learning.

Move… in the morning AND the afternoon!

Did you know moving is a key component of learning??  Research has found that exercise improves both behavior and academic performance.  And this doesn’t just apply to children!

We appreciate and understand the challenges parents face trying to balance working from home and helping kids in the virtual classroom.  Incorporating physical activity for at least 30 minutes in the morning AND the afternoon can lead to a much happier household.  No need to be a full blown drill sergeant, simply allow for running, jumping, and being loud!  Kids needs to let that pent up energy out… or it shows up as poor attention spans or bad behavior.

Stretch as a family!

Do you ever feel general body aches and soreness after a long day of… sitting??  Children experience the same thing, sometimes on an even greater scale!  Sitting promotes the body to develop poor postural habits that result in tight muscles.  For children, add the growing factor on top of a sedentary day and you’re setting the stage for a long night of aches and pains.  As the bones grow longer, the muscles can’t keep up.  The muscles then pull on the bones creating those horrible “growing pains.”

Stretching is the answer!  Developing a healthy stretching routine at an early age can lead to healthier long-term lifestyle habits.  Join the kids and make stretching a fun, family event.  You need it too!

Drink water!

Do you know if your child is drinking enough water?  Below is a quick breakdown of how much water children should consume according to WebMD:

  • 2-4 years old: 2-4 cups (16- 32 oz)
  • 4-8 years old: 5-6 cups (32- 40 oz)
  • 9-13 years old: 7-8 cups (56-64 oz)
  • 14 and up: 8-11 cups (64- 88 oz)

Most adults walk around with some level of dehydration.  Low level dehydration can result in many ill-effects,

including muscle and joint pain (including the spine), increased blood pressure, increased risk for injury, increased risk of urinary-tract infections, and more!  While wearing face coverings, the need for proper hydration increases even more due to increased body temperature.  Water breaks are a great way to change up the day and keep the family well-hydrated!

Chiropractic care for kids… safe and effective!

At no stage in life is the body enduring more change than during growth and adolescence!   Physical and developmental changes are at their peak from birth through puberty.  The body is constantly replicating cells to grow and adapt preparing for adulthood.  You may notice that your child is very clumsy for a period of time- you know, that awkward puppy stage!  This is because the nervous system is trying to keep up with the changes within the body.  Since the spine houses the nervous system, why wouldn’t you want to ensure it’s functioning at its best!?

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to establish proper movement patterns and prevent structural imbalances at an early stage of life.  And it’s never too early!

Why is keeping a healthy spine so important?

As mentioned above, the spine has the very important job of being the literal back bone of the body!  Maintaining proper spinal alignment and strong postural muscles is essential for function.  The mechanics of the spine has a direct impact on how the body moves… and how the nerves communicate with the rest of the body.  Chiropractic is the best way to ensure everything is moving and communicating well.  Call to schedule your child’s first visit today!

Success Story: A New “Take on Life”

My New “Take on Life” Gave me the Opportunity to Take ON a New Life!”

By: Susan Haas

When you chat with Laurie Meyers, you can’t help but smile.

Her sparkling personality and upbeat “attitude of gratitude” mentality bubbles to the surface the moment you meet her. It makes you wonder if she’s a)either on her 5th shot of espresso, or b) – just one of those naturally positive people who look at life everyday as a gift. You know, the people those of us who DO need 5 shots of espresso to open our eyes all the way in the morning let alone smile, have a love/hate relationship with.  Turns out it is the latter. While her perkiness has always been a part of her personality, she hasn’t always enjoyed the same quality of life to match her effervescence. Her story is one that we espresso-dependent people can learn a lot from.

“I was extremely overweight, lethargic and my quality of life was not where I wanted it to be. I suffered with Rheumatoid Arthritis and had also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

My diet was erratic and regular exercise was definitely not on my radar. I was always too tired or in too much pain to really embrace my life at the time, even though I’m a very positive person by nature.” says the 64-year-old, her eyes cast downward as she reflects on the challenges her health issues and lifestyle choices had confined her to.  “I had no energy. Everyday tasks like household chores were difficult.” Laurie recalls. An avid dog lover, even walking her two beloved Goldendoodles posed challenges. In addition to the physical limitations, Laurie’s self-image also suffered. “I hated looking in the mirror and I avoided cameras at all costs. I didn’t like what I saw, and I didn’t like what other people saw, including my family. I know it was difficult for them to watch this downward spiral in both my physical and emotional health.” Laurie knew if she didn’t make some major lifestyle changes, things would only get worse.  “I had already had hip replacement surgery on both hips and was facing knee replacement surgery, so I decided enough was enough!  I felt a responsibility to myself, my husband and children to start to live healthier.”

And so began Laurie’s journey.

She turned to her daughter, Dr. Amanda Meyers-Kuper and the Body Logic Chiropractic team and took the first step. “With the help of my daughter and her wonderful and knowledgeable staff, the first thing I did was change to a gluten-free diet. I won’t tell you it was easy, I mean, after years of eating so poorly, my body wasn’t used to it, so it was a process. Baby steps. I remember thinking “How in the world is anything gluten -free going to taste good and how much of a hassle it would be to find it. But you know what? It wasn’t that difficult to find; plus, to my surprise, most everything tasted really good! Take it from me, I’m a lifelong foodie – I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true! I also began to make gluten-free recipes for myself and my husband, which also helped.” Slowly, Laurie’s energy began to match her personality and zest for life as the weight started to come off and she was able to do more activities with less pain. “I could not believe how much better I felt. It was like a new take on life!”

In addition to making major changes in her diet, with the help of Dr. Amanda, Laurie was able to familiarize herself with and become knowledgeable about supplementation to incorporate into and work in conjunction with her dietary changes. “I take several daily supplements in addition to ASEA (I call it liquid gold!)  and the topical ointment RENU 28 to help with any joint flair ups or inflammation, which occur far less frequently now since I’ve begun this journey, plus I have found they’re equally as important to my overall health as is the food consumption.”

Laurie also incorporated chiropractic work and massage therapy in addition to regular exercise to balance out her health routine and regimen.

Small steps, like walking the dogs and riding a stationary bike helped motivate her to continue on her journey. As with all goals in life, there are challenges along the way and success is after all, when preparation meets opportunity. In the case with Laurie, these steppingstones were preparing her body and mind for not only a life of healthful living, but also that knee replacement surgery she knew had to occur at some point. “I knew I needed to have the surgery, and taking that time to prepare myself for it by applying a comprehensive approach of diet, supplementation and exercise made all the difference in how I handled the surgery from an emotional perspective, as well as allowed me to heal more quickly and thoroughly because my body and mind were stronger than ever.”

Today, Laurie’s exuberance is an inspiration to all.

“I’ve lost a hundred and fifty pounds, my energy level is through the roof, I love having fun, exploring, hiking, bike riding, beach combing and most of all, being able to do things with my grandchildren! Every day is a new adventure!  It is the absolute best feeling in the world, and I wish it on anyone. If you’re taking the time to read my story, I encourage you to make time for yourself. You’ll be amazed at what you were missing out on. And on a side note, for someone who hated having her picture taken, I’m the first one to “smile for the camera!”

Success Story: “I didn’t win the contest, but I still WON!”

Twenty years ago Kristin Russo’s world changed forever.

“I was working as a security guard and my life’s dream was to become a police officer. That all changed in an instant, and I found myself in unfamiliar waters.” says the soft-spoken 47 year old, her brown eyes gazing downward. In her late twenties, Kristin was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) an auto-immune illness that attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness throughout the body. Progressive in nature, if left untreated, RA can create permanent joint damage, making it difficult to perform even the simplest of tasks. Often times, those affected with this debilitating and painful illness are unable to physically care for themselves or live independently.

“I was in constant pain physically, but it was also emotionally devastating.

Everything I had planned for my future was in question. I grew up in a household where hard work was part of what defined you.  My parents set a wonderful example. Their work ethic rubbed off on me, so when I was diagnosed with RA and my doctor told me there eventually would come a day when I wouldn’t be able to work anymore, I had no idea what my new normal was going to be. How would I define myself now if I didn’t have a career? I felt lost, helpless and hopeless…. and depression set in.”

Deterred but determined, Kristin was very proactive in working with her team of doctors, where they created a plan to help manage her RA with medication, which eventually enabled her to work part-time and maintain a quality of life that kept her busy, but not fulfilled. “I was working and socializing, but there was still a piece of the puzzle missing. I remember looking for something on the internet one night and an ad kept popping up to win a free massage at Body Logic. I never win anything so I didn’t even bother to enter, however I did call them to set up an appointment with a chiropractor, something my doctors and I had discussed. I made an appointment with Dr. Scott Kuper. I remember being slightly nervous on the drive over and not really knowing what to expect. The moment I walked through the door I felt a sense of peace and calm. There were smiling faces to greet me and the wonderful scent of lavender and peppermint. It was a far cry from some of the other offices I had been in. It was serene, not sterile. I knew this was a place where I could feel safe. The energy is so positive.”

“I met with Dr. Scott and he asked me questions, not just about my physical health, but about how this illness was affecting me emotionally.

He sat with me for as long as I wanted to talk before-  as well as after – my exam. He also educated me and gave me advice and explained everything about my  exam in terms I understood. I didn’t feel like I had to go and google everything after I left!” says Russo, shaking her head and smiling.  After her initial and follow-up exams, Dr. Scott and Kristin came up with a plan that was specific to her condition, customizing a routine that included regular chiropractic visits and massages along with stretches and exercises she could do at home. He also recommended she see Dr. Amanda Meyers-Kuper for nutrition counseling. “That was a game changer for me!” says Russo, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Dr. Amanda and I talked about a nutrition plan combined with supplements that would work in conjunction with my medications and the chiropractic program Dr. Scott had devised.  It was a light-bulb moment for me. I realized how a comprehensive approach to total health and making lifestyle changes could lead to the quality of life I thought I had lost forever. For the first time I believed there was hope that I could not just survive, but thrive!”

And she has indeed thrived!

Kristin discovered a passion for cooking, using recipes from the nutrition plan she and Dr. Amanda created. Kristin’s eyes come alive with excitement as she talks about her newfound love of creating healthy meals. “I absolutely love to cook! I find myself spending hours looking up gluten free recipes along with creating my own. I enjoy doing it for myself and sharing it with others.”

Kristin is enjoying life to the fullest thanks to a positive attitude and a care team of doctors and medical professionals. Life has new meaning. “But you know, that’s the thing about life. Sometimes you have to adjust your sails if your ship doesn’t come in, so that’s what I did. In fact, I just went on my very first cruise with my family. I couldn’t have done that without the help of Body Logic. I have to say, not winning that contest was a winning decision for me!”

What Happens If I’m in a Motor Vehicle Accident- Part 2

Where do I begin?

It happened.  The first step is to talk to the auto insurance company.  If you plan to utilize coverage for your medical bills related to the accident, you must create a claim.

If you are at-fault for the accident, it is important to find out if you have bodily injury coverage through your own insurance. Please note, coverage for medical care for the at-fault driver is not standard on an insurance policy.  We encourage everyone to review their policies to ensure the driver is protected and has coverage.

If the other party is at-fault, you need to acquire their insurance information.  Call and find out if a claim has already been filed or if you need to create one.  If the other driver does not have insurance, contact your auto insurance company.

Schedule an appointment.

If you are new to Body Logic or have not received care in the last 6-12 months, you will need to schedule a new patient appointment.  Please inform our receptionist that the reason you are seeking care is because of a motor vehicle accident.  We will provide instructions to help you be prepared for your upcoming appointment.

If you are a current patient at Body Logic, call and inform our office of the accident before your next appointment.  Our doctors need enough time in the first appointment after the accident to perform an examination.  We want to ensure you receive the necessary attention.  And we do not want to disrupt other patients’ care.

After you have scheduled an appointment, we will email you a link to fill out an intake form.  There are special instructions to ensure the intake form is filled out properly for an auto-injury.  Following these instructions is essential for us to collect the appropriate information to best support your case.

What information do I need ready to provide?

We understand it can be overwhelming after being in a car accident.  Providing as much information as possible will help the process go smoothly.  The following information is needed for our office to file your medical bills properly:

  • Auto insurance information of the party responsible for paying your medical bills
  • Claim number
  • Claim adjuster’s name and contact information
  • Attorney’s name and contact information, if legal action is being taken
  • Health insurance information
    • If Body Logic is in-network with your health insurance, we are required to file claims through them first.

What paperwork do I need to fill out?

Once at the office for your appointment, there are a handful of additional forms that need to be completed.  Please allot an extra 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to complete the following paperwork:

  • Motor Vehicle Accident Information Form
  • Authorization Request to Receive and Release Records
  • Patient Record Access Permission
  • Consent to Treatment
  • Financial Policy Agreement
  • Irrevocable Lien
  • Assignment of Benefits
  • HIPAA Notice of Privacy

Start Feeling Better!

Once the initial examination and paperwork is completed, it’s time to focus on you!  The doctors will create a treatment plan tailored to your personal condition and situation.  Treatment will include a number of different modalities, such as electrical muscle stimulation or stretches and exercises, and adjustments.  Appointment frequency is based on the doctors recommendations.  Periodically, a progress examination will be performed.  The assessment provides objective information regarding your condition and the progress of healing.  This takes time.  Refer to the prior motor vehicle accident article to review the stages of healing after trauma.  We will work together as a team to provide the best care possible as your body heals.   It is our goal to reduce pain and restore function to the body.

Now What?

Once your body has reached what’s called “maximum clinical improvement” treatment ends- related to the motor vehicle accident.  The doctors complete and compile all the clinical notes related to your case.  The additional paperwork is gathered and an invoice is printed.  The paperwork is then forwarded to either your attorney, if there is litigation involved, or the insurance company responsible for paying.  And we wait for the claim to be processed.

Whether or not you were a patient prior to the accident, we always recommend you continue with chiropractic care to maintain your spinal health and integrity.  Just like going to the dentist to ensure your teeth are healthy, visiting your chiropractor to ensure your spine is healthy is important for overall health.  At Body Logic, we enjoy long-term relationships with our patients to help them move better, feel better, and live better!

August 2020 at Body Logic

Welcome August!

Virginia Beach is in the middle of the summer season and we feel the heat!  Although there are many important aspects of health we should consider all the time, our biggest focus is hydration.  Water, water, water!  The body is 70% water… and when it’s hot, we lose that water quickly!  But simply pounding the water isn’t the way to go.  As we sweat, we lose minerals along with the water. These minerals include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and more!  These minerals explain why sweat tastes salty!  We are literally seeping sodium from our pores as we sweat.

So you need to consider your health in its entirety.  How is your diet?  Are you getting enough vegetables in your diet to replenish those minerals?  Are you eating a highly inflammatory diet?  This includes fried foods, pizza, ice-cream, and candy.  Are you drinking a lot of alcohol?  Your hydration status is more than just the number of ounces of water you drink in the day.

What’s the solution for staying hydrated?  Be kind to your body during these hot months!  Eat a healthy diet that replenishes the nutrients the body needs and deserves.  Avoid the beer and pizza, bring on the water and the veggies.  We’ll be complaining about the cold soon enough!!

10% Off- Let’s keep the focus on Nutrition!

Doctors Out of the Office in August 2020

Dr. Amanda and Dr. Scott will be out of the office Friday, August 14th thru Wednesday, August 19th. They are planning to visit Dr. Amanda’s hometown in New York to spend time with family; safety permitting.  Dr. Matt will be in the office and patients as usual while they are away.  We encourage patients to schedule massages and/or see Dr. Matt to maintain continuity of care.  We are here to help you move better, feel better, and live better!

Upcoming Announcements!

Dr. Amanda has been hard at work behind the scenes to keep Body Logic available and safe during these uncertain times.  Although her time “in the office” has been limited, there have been countless hours spent researching and planning in order to make change possible.  There is no better time to work even harder than during a pandemic!  Stay-tuned for more!

Dr. Amanda will also be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the opening of Body Logic Massage & Chiropractic on September 1st!  The original Body Logic was owned and operated by Jim Browning from 2006 to 2010 when Dr. Amanda took ownership.  We started planning an exciting Anniversary Event in the spring… and the planning has been delayed to say the least.  But don’t worry, celebration is still in the air!  We look forward to many more years of helping the Virginia Beach community move better, feel better, and live better!
