What’s Happening at Body Logic: September 2020

Best Wishes, Dr. Matt!

It is with appreciation and gratitude that we said farewell to Dr. Matt on August 21, 2020.  Click here to read a letter from Dr. Matt to his Body Logic community of staff and patients.

Dr. Amanda and Dr. Scott will be taking over Dr. Matt’s patients’ care as Body Logic adapts to only having two doctors.  We plan to hire another doctor in the future, but will not be rushing the process.  We want to ensure we find the best fit for our office culture and our patients’ needs.  Given the quick transition and the challenge of having school-age children, Dr. Amanda and Dr. Scott are doing their best to accommodate patient hours of availability.  We will keep you informed of any schedule changes and/or increased availability as we progress into the fall.  Please let us know if you have any specific needs and we will do our best to meet them!

If you are unable to get a chiropractic appointment as quickly as desired, we encourage you to schedule a massage with our amazing team of massage therapists.  Click here to read about the different massage types available.  And see below for special pricing through the month of September!

Please Continue Protecting Each Other During the Pandemic

We empathize with our Virginia Beach community as we have all felt challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Who knew it would last this long?!  Regardless, it remains the utmost importance that we keep our patients, clients, and staff safe and healthy.  We will continue asking questions regarding your health and any potential concern for contact with someone that had a positive COVID-19 test since your last entry into the office. Body Logic requires all staff and patrons to utilize face coverings as stated in Executive Order 63 that remains in effect for Virginia.

Please note, Body Logic is a healthcare facility that provides care to many people with a variety of health conditions.  We ask you to understand that some patients have health conditions that are negatively impacted by wearing a face covering and, therefore, are not required to as per Executive Order 63.  Body Logic does not discriminate against nor neglect care for a patients that fall into this category.  Our sanitary practices are within CDC standards and we care about your health.  We understand and respect if you make the choice not to enter our facility based on the possibility that someone may not have a face covering.  Only you can determine your personal preference and level of risk of exposure.  Stop the spread.  Wear a mask.  And please be respectful of each other.

August 2020 at Body Logic

Welcome August!

Virginia Beach is in the middle of the summer season and we feel the heat!  Although there are many important aspects of health we should consider all the time, our biggest focus is hydration.  Water, water, water!  The body is 70% water… and when it’s hot, we lose that water quickly!  But simply pounding the water isn’t the way to go.  As we sweat, we lose minerals along with the water. These minerals include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and more!  These minerals explain why sweat tastes salty!  We are literally seeping sodium from our pores as we sweat.

So you need to consider your health in its entirety.  How is your diet?  Are you getting enough vegetables in your diet to replenish those minerals?  Are you eating a highly inflammatory diet?  This includes fried foods, pizza, ice-cream, and candy.  Are you drinking a lot of alcohol?  Your hydration status is more than just the number of ounces of water you drink in the day.

What’s the solution for staying hydrated?  Be kind to your body during these hot months!  Eat a healthy diet that replenishes the nutrients the body needs and deserves.  Avoid the beer and pizza, bring on the water and the veggies.  We’ll be complaining about the cold soon enough!!

10% Off- Let’s keep the focus on Nutrition!

Veg E Pro Shake Mix -Vanilla or Chocolate Flavored Vegan Protein

Standard Process’ Veg-E Complete Pro Chocolate offers an organic multi-source blend of plant-based protein in a convenient powder with delicious chocolate or vanilla flavor

Doctors Out of the Office in August 2020

Dr. Amanda and Dr. Scott will be out of the office Friday, August 14th thru Wednesday, August 19th. They are planning to visit Dr. Amanda’s hometown in New York to spend time with family; safety permitting.  Dr. Matt will be in the office and patients as usual while they are away.  We encourage patients to schedule massages and/or see Dr. Matt to maintain continuity of care.  We are here to help you move better, feel better, and live better!

Upcoming Announcements!

Dr. Amanda has been hard at work behind the scenes to keep Body Logic available and safe during these uncertain times.  Although her time “in the office” has been limited, there have been countless hours spent researching and planning in order to make change possible.  There is no better time to work even harder than during a pandemic!  Stay-tuned for more!

Dr. Amanda will also be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the opening of Body Logic Massage & Chiropractic on September 1st!  The original Body Logic was owned and operated by Jim Browning from 2006 to 2010 when Dr. Amanda took ownership.  We started planning an exciting Anniversary Event in the spring… and the planning has been delayed to say the least.  But don’t worry, celebration is still in the air!  We look forward to many more years of helping the Virginia Beach community move better, feel better, and live better!

July 2020 at Body Logic

Can you believe we’re half-way through 2020!?!  It seems like the fastest and longest 6 months EVER… but that’s just a matter of perception.  For some of us, 2020 has brought challenges and struggles that have never been endured.  For some of us, 2020 has brought blessings and silver-linings in abundance.  And for some us, life just continued on with minimal impact on the day-to-day.  I truly believe that all of us have been taught lessons in patience and gratitude.  At Body Logic, we hope that our care and compassion for our patients and clients have been positive lights that have provided comfort during such uncertain times.  We are here for you.

As we enter July, we have our usual updates around the office to share with you.  And we wish you all a safe and healthy July 4th!!

First, Let’s Talk About Health!

How are you?  How is your body?  How is your head?  How is your heart?

Everyone is experiencing the current state of the world through their own eyes and bodies.  And not everyone is the same!  One commonality, however, is that we all endure stress.  Stress can be physical, mental, and/or emotional in outward presentation.  But the body doesn’t differentiate where the stress is coming from- it’s just stress!

In order to combat the stress, it is essential that the body is fueled with quality vitamins and minerals.  If we don’t have quality building blocks of nutrition, how can we expect the body to thrive and protect its immune system.  You can try to get it in your diet, but it’s not easy!  Standard Process has made it simpler than ever to support your body with the raw materials it needs.  Body Logic is offering 10% off the different packets available for the month July!  Check them out below.  Most are available for purchase in the office.  And if not, we can help you gain access!

Happy 3-year Anniversary, Dr. Matt!

Dr. Matt celebrates his 3rd Anniversary with our Body Logic Team this month.  And to celebrate, he’s taking some much deserved time off!  Dr. Matt will be out of the office July 1-10. He will return to his normal patient hours on Monday, July 13th.  We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Matt and are lucky to have his skill set and kindness on our team.  Dr. Amanda and Dr. Scott will be treating patients during his time off.  Even if you’re a “regular” Dr. Matt patient, you are welcome to see one of the other doctors while Dr. Matt is out of the office.

Welcome to the Team, Harmony!

Harmony is our newest addition to our front desk staff at Body Logic.  The pandemic delayed her start date, which was originally intended for March!  But we are happy to have her with us now.  We’ll be updating our website soon to include pictures and more.  In the meantime, here’s a little info about Harmony:

Harmony has lived in Virginia Beach for 6 years. She is originally from Vancouver, BC, Canada.  She studied her undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia and Homeopathy at the Vancouver Homeopathic Academy. She is very happy to be working in a holistic clinic and joining a team of people who love what they do.

In her spare time, Harmony enjoys many outdoor activities including water sports, skiing, hiking, biking and yoga. She loves being married and a Mom to two amazing children.

Welcome to the Team, Jenessa!

Jenessa is our newest addition to our massage therapist team at Body Logic.  She rounds out our team of massage therapists with an enthusiastic drive to help each of her clients.  We’ll be updating our website soon to include pictures and more.  Here’s a little info about Jenessa until the updates are made:

Jenessa comes to Body Logic from the panhandle of Florida. Jenessa brings her passion for massage as well as knowledge from working many roles in the field of Physical Therapy. Jenessa is trained in many modalities of Massage Therapy some of which include Swedish, Sports, Deep Tissue, Cupping, and Aromatherapy. Each massage Jenessa performs is carefully crafted to respond to exactly the type of bodywork that is best fit for each client. Her goal for each session is to enable her clients to perform at their optimal level in both work and recreation.

When Jenessa is not practicing massage, she loves cooking, gardening, and spending sweet time with her St.Bernard Captain and her rescue cat 2-Stroke.

Modified hours and face coverings remain in effect.

Forward Virginia: Phase 3 is effective starting July 1st.  Although this allows for some leniency in the number of people allowed in a given area, Executive Order 63 remains in effect.  We understand and appreciate the different views surrounding face coverings.  And we continue to appreciate your awareness and respect for your fellow Body Logic patrons.  Please feel comfortable to discuss your limitations regarding wearing a face covering with your provider once in the treatment room.

Body Logic will continue to run on our most recent modified hours.  Massage is available Monday/Wednesday/Thursday 9am-6pm and Tuesday/Friday 9am-5pm.  We will remain closed on Saturdays.  To see the doctors’ schedules, click here!

June 2020 at Body Logic

We welcome June with open arms!  Although it is an uncertain time, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the Earth is bountiful!  We wish you all the opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather (when it’s not raining) and share in our gratitude for the beauty that surrounds us.  Change is everywhere… and below you will find the changes and updates of Body Logic for June 2020!

Virginia mandate: face coverings required in public places.

On Tuesday, May 26th the Governor of Virginia made a statement and released a new statewide mandate, Safer at Home: Phase One.  Click here to read the details of Executive Order 63.  At Body Logic, we are respecting the mandate and ask that all patrons and staff wear their face coverings in the office.  We will continue to adapt as recommendations are made and we work through the different phases of reopening.  Click here to see the email content sent to your inbox on Thursday, May 28th.

Stay clean and speak kindly!

Please continue being diligent with your personal cleanliness practices!  Hand-washing is of the utmost importance as people begin emerging from their homes.  And we ask that you continue to monitor your risk and any signs for potential symptoms.  We also recognize that this is a very unpredictable time… who knows what will happen as Virginia and the rest of the nation journey through the different phases of reopening?!  We ask that while in our office, you are respectful of fellow patrons and their views of the pandemic.  Body Logic is a place for healing and comfort.  Please refrain from discussing social and political views in the office.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation and efforts to help make everyone that enters Body Logic feel comfortable and welcome.

Massage is Open!

Body Logic reopened massage services starting May 18th.  So far it has been a success!  Our massage therapists are taking care of our beloved clients with caution and compassion.  Extra cleaning between clients is mandatory.  Please remember to wait until your appointment time to enter the office.  The fewer people we have in small spaces, the healthier we can be!

Picture of Ashley - a massage therapist at Body Logic Massage & Chiropractic in Virginia Beach

Mid-June will bring change to Body Logic’s massage staff as we say goodbye to our dear Ashley, who has been with us since October 2018.  She has proudly cared for many of our members and patients.  And we will miss her!  She is moving back to Baltimore, MD to be closer to family and start another adventure.  Thank you, Ashley, for all the people you have helped in our beautiful Virginia Beach community.  We wish you the best!

Additional chiropractic hours available starting June 15th!

We are happy to report that we are opening additional chiropractic hours of availability for Dr. Scott and Dr. Amanda starting the week of June 15th.  Click here to view patient hours for each doctor at Body Logic.

Congratulations Graduates!

From preschoolers and kindergartens to high school and college grads, CONGRATULATIONS!!  The world may not be as you expected it to be as you embark on your next journey… but that doesn’t take away how proud you should be of your accomplishments.  From Body Logic to you, we only wish you future success!

Thank you Teachers and School Administration!

As we watch graduates move on to the next adventure, our school teachers and administrators are in the thick of it!  They have adapted and overcome some very big obstacles with more decisions yet to be made.  To honor the hard work and dedication these professionals have shown us, we are offering these individuals $15 off regularly priced massages throughout the month of June!  Simply bring your school administration ID to your massage and you will receive the discount at checkout.  We appreciate YOU!

Scoliosis- What You Need to Know!

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month.  It’s likely you’ve heard the word “scoliosis” to describe someone’s posture or diagnosed condition.  But do you really know what that means??  Do you have a scoliosis?  Is your child developing a scoliosis?  Here are some basics to help you understand the condition better and when to seek care.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.  The lateral curvature can happen in different areas of the spine, including more than one area.  Small curvatures may go unnoticed if they barely impact the movement patterns of the spine.  Larger curvatures, however, can result in more noticeable, and sometimes painful, changes.

What are symptoms of Scoliosis?

Symptoms of scoliosis are often dependent on the severity of the curve (see below).  Here is a list of potential symptoms:

  • One shoulder blade higher than the other
  • A shoulder blade that sticks out more than the other
  • The appearance that the head is not centered with the rest of the body
  • The appearance that one shoulder is higher than the other
  • Uneven hips or one hip sticking out more than the other
  • A rotated spine
  • Pushed out ribs
  • Difficulty breathing due to a reduced available area for lung expansion
  • Back pain and discomfort
  • Arms not hanging down straight next to the body
  • When bending forward, the appearance that the two sides of the back are different heights

How is Scoliosis diagnosed?

Scoliosis is most often diagnosed in early childhood.  However, it is possible that a scoliosis develops later in life.  There is a test named “Adam’s forward bend test” that is performed by a nurse or doctor as a screening tool.  A scoliosis diagnosis is confirmed by x-ray.  If there is a curvature of 10° or larger, it can be labeled as scoliosis.  The severity of the condition is based on the curvature measurement.

  • mild curve is less than 20 degrees.
  • moderate curve is between 25 degrees and 40 degrees.
  • severe curve is more than 50 degrees.

What causes Scoliosis?

There are various reasons for a scoliosis to develop, most often affecting children.  Two to three percent of the US population is impacted.  The different types of scoliosis can help determine treatment needs.

Idiopathic Scoliosis- The cause of the most common form of scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis, is unknown.  The majority of diagnoses occurs between the age of 10 and adulthood.  Chiropractic care is a very effective form of treatment for both pain management and preventing progression of the curvature.  Restoring proper vertebral movement (chiropractic adjustment), improving posture and back muscle strength (stretches/exercises), and maintaining proper nutritional health can all have very positive impacts on the symptoms associated with scoliosis.

Congenital Scoliosis- Congenital scoliosis means the patient was born with the condition.  This most often happens when the baby is developing in utero.  A vertebrae in the spine may be misshaped, missing, or even fused to another bone.  Congenital scoliosis can have more severe curvatures resulting in rib pain and breathing difficulties.  Other health problems may be associated as well, including heart and kidney concerns.  Chiropractic care can be very effective to help manage the symptoms associated with congenital scoliosis.

Neuromuscular Scoliosis- Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by any medical condition that affects the muscles and nerves.  Muscle weakness and imbalances are often the cause.  Cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy are examples of medical conditions tassociated.  Chiropractic care can assist in the management of symptoms associated with neuromuscular conditions in conjunction with other physicians.

What are additional treatment options?

It is important to seek proper treatment advice when scoliosis is diagnosed.  At-home care consists of regular stretching and exercising, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep.  Chiropractic care and massage therapy reduce muscle tension and improve spinal movement.  Maintaining proper mechanics is extremely helpful in preventing additional pain and irritation to the spine.

If early detection finds a moderate to severe scoliosis, a back brace may be recommended to prevent further progression of the curve.  And some curvatures are severe enough that surgical intervention is necessary.  It is important to discuss any concerns with your primary care physician and doctor of chiropractic.  Early detection and treatment is key to preventing long-term complications.

Suspicious of scoliosis impacting a loved one?  Already diagnosed with scoliosis?  Call or contact Body Logic today for evaluation and treatment options!

May 2020 Highlights at Body Logic

Happy May to our wonderful community!  The Earth is changing and preparing for the growing season ahead of us.  While our neighbors to the north experienced some extra snow in spring, Virginia Beach is blooming and ready for summer.  We truly wish everyone health and happiness as the world is still in a state of confusion and concern regarding COVID-19.  We count our blessings daily as our staff has continued to remain healthy and have not come in any known contact with the virus.  Here are a couple of updates about Body Logic… some of which are subject to change based on Virginia’s journey to reopening.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We want to wish everyone filling the “mom” role a very Happy Mother’s Day!!  One of the positive realizations during the pandemic has been a greater appreciation for the patience, compassion, and selflessness that moms can exhibit even in the most chaotic of times.  Typically, this is a time of year we promote our massage gift certificate sales – the gift of quiet, calm, and comfort can be a true blessing for mom!  Although we aren’t providing massages at this time, we are running our annual sale of $10 OFF 60-minute massages and $15 OFF 90-minute massages.  Gift certificates can be purchased online at sale price by using promo codes “10$offMD” and “15$offMD” respectively.  Simply enter the code when viewing the cart to receive your discount!  We will keep everyone updated as to when massage gift certificates can be used again…

Massage is still on hold.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to wait for the green light to begin massage services again.  We understand many of you are anxious to return to the table, but we must adhere to state guidelines to ensure the safety of our community.  Thankfully, we have high cleanliness standards including washing all sheets and face cradle covers after each massage.  We also use and diffuse immune-boosting essential oils in the office and in treatment rooms throughout the day.  We look forward to having our massage therapists back in action, helping our community relieve their mental, emotional, and physical stresses that have been building up for the last 6 weeks.  In the mean time, we will continue to…

Keep it clean while providing chiropractic care.

The enthusiastic “thank you for being here!” comments from our patients have made the challenges during this crazy time seem minimal.  It has truly been our pleasure to continue serving the community.  By modifying our hours, adapting our reception area and check-in procedures, and cleaning high touch-points and our tables between every patient, Body Logic remains committed to your health.  We are now equipped with face coverings that can be worn in the treatment room as per patient request.  We are here for you and your spinal and joint health needs!  Looking for at-home healthy options…

Check out our other health resources!

The pandemic has brought light to the fact that we at Body Logic haven’t been sharing our other health resources as much as we could or should!  As we continue to adapt to whatever the “new normal” will be, it is our mission to bring more attention to the self-care tools we have available for the community.

To start, did you know we have TENs units, foam rollers, pillows, and more available for purchase?!   Just ask!  Our doctors work hard daily providing hands-on care for our patients- why not help yourself at home?!  As social distancing restrictions lighten, we plan to better utilize our gym/meeting space to provide increased exposure and trial use to products that can help you at home.  Watch for changes occurring over the next couple months!

How about our love for doTERRA essential oils?!  We’ve provided various essential oil recipes over the last 6-8 weeks on our social media (@BodyLogicVB).  We have realized that there are a lot of oils in the office ready to be sold!  Please ask the front desk for a list of oils available!  Moving forward, we will be reducing our in-office inventory.  The focus will be on oils used to support a healthy musculoskeletal system along with a few standard, everyday-use oils.  Click here to browse and purchase online!  If you have any questions, our beloved doTERRA expert, Vicki Fersch, RN, is available for consult.

And we can’t forget about our Standard Process supplements!  We will also be narrowing down a focus of supplements available in the office- they’re just too good to not have available.  You have access to purchasing their products online by going to StandardProcess.com and clicking on Patient Direct.  Click “register” under patient and enter Body Logic’s office code (57FQR9) to request permission to order online.  Not all supplements are created equal- we trust this company and know you are getting what you pay for!

Closed for Memorial Day

The schedules have been crazy and we don’t know what each day will bring.  But that doesn’t change our appreciation for all the men and women that have sacrificed and served our fine country- WE ARE GRATEFUL!  Body Logic will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.  Take a moment and reflect on the beauty and safety that surrounds us.  It has taken many people, past and present, to provide that for us as Americans.  Thank you for your service.

Massage Services On Hold. Chiropractic Still Available

To our beloved Body Logic patrons:

In compliance with the state of Virginia’s closure of non-essential businesses, including the massage industry, Body Logic has elected to stop providing massage services effective Wednesday, March 24, 2020.  The closure is expected to last until April 24th, pending any potential changes made by Governor Northam or the federal government.  We are sad that we won’t be able to provide the much needed stress relief and pain management that massage offers our clients and patients.  However, we respect the need to help slow the curve.  Please keep our amazing massage therapists in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  They work hard and care deeply for our community; and to be told to stop helping people through their gifted hands is challenging.  We are keeping in close communication with them.  They send their well-wishes and prayers for health and safety to all of you.  You may have questions regarding how this impacts you…

I’m a Body Logic massage member.  What happens now?

We are grateful for our massage members and appreciate your loyalty to our office!  Some members are unable to redeem their March massages.  That massage will be waiting for you once the restriction is lifted.  Body Logic will not debit your account for the massage membership draft for April.  We will reevaluate whether or not we will draft in May based on further guidance by our government.

I have a massage gift certificate that is going to expire.  Can I still redeem it?

We will be “freezing” all gift certificates while massage services are unavailable.  The number of days that massage is unavailable will be added to your expiration date.  We want you to get your massage!

I had a massage in the last 2 weeks.  Should I be concerned?

We want to reassure you that Body Logic has taken precautions to prevent exposure to COVID-19 for both our staff and our clients/patients.  There has been no known exposure in our office at this time.  We are compliant with CDC regulations and have increased our sanitation practices above our normal high standards.

Body Logic remains open for chiropractic services.

We feel a commitment to our community and fellow health-care professionals to remain available for chiropractic services.  Did you know the #2 reason for scheduling a doctor’s appointment is low back pain, second only to the common cold?  Given the current health status of our country, we can help lighten the load of our emergency medical staff and family practitioners.  Please know that we are here for you!

If you are a patient, you may have questions regarding how this impacts you…

What sanitary precautions is Body Logic taking?

Body Logic’s office is professionally cleaned.  In addition, our staff is taking hourly sanitary precautions, following CDC guidelines, and limiting contact among patients and staff.  Please note: we are not utilizing personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks because we do not come in contact with bodily fluids.  Due to the worldwide shortage, we feel it is important that PPE is best used by our healthcare professionals coming in direct contact with the virus.

I fall under the high-risk category.  OR someone in my house falls under the high-risk category.  Should I still come to my appointment?

That is entirely up to you!  We are taking sanitary precautions noted above, but completely understand if you prefer to remain home to be safe.  We are making daily reminder calls to find out if you will be attending your scheduled appointment.  If you know in advance that you prefer to cancel or reschedule, please feel free to contact us first at 757-427-0355.

How can we help keep Body Logic safe?

The health and safety of our staff and clients/patients is of the utmost importance.  Here’s how you can help:

  • If you are exhibiting any signs of illness, particularly coughing, fever, or shortness of breath, please call and cancel/reschedule your appointment.
  • If someone in your home is exhibiting any signs of illness, we ask that you call and cancel/reschedule your appointment.
  • If someone comes with you to your appointment, please ask that person to wait in the vehicle while you are in your appointment to limit unnecessary exposure.
  • If you have small children that you must bring with you to your appointment, please limit the number of toys you bring from your home to 1/child.  We also ask that you bring sanitary items such as hand sanitizing wipes with you to help us save our supply for your fellow patients.
  • Please wait to enter the office until your appointment time to prevent unnecessary contact with other patients.

Are office hours changing?

Yes.  A big THANK YOU to everyone that responded to the survey sent over the weekend, we have been able to start planning with data.  Change is necessary to ensure the health and safety of our community as well as the financial state of Body Logic.  We are working to finalize office hours and staffing to become effective Monday, March 30, 2020.   Please be on the lookout for another announcement later this week!  Body Logic will be closed on Saturdays until massage services resume.

We thank you for your support and understanding as we adapt to the current circumstances in our community, city, state, country, and world.  For the most up-to-date information, please follow us on Facebook.

Happy March everyone!  We have a lot of things happening in the office that we’re excited to share with you!  As always, we appreciate all of you and your continued dedication to your health.  Thank you for allowing Body Logic to be apart of your journey to better health.   First, we have an employment change here in the office. Our current office manager, Becky, will be leaving Body Logic after this month to pursue her career as a yoga instructor. She has been teaching on the Eastern Shore where she lives in her hometown of Cape Charles, Virginia. The opportunity to take that leap of faith to offer her talents to better the health of her community has come to fruition.  We are sad to see her go, but excited for this next step in her journey toward her ultimate goal of being a Yoga Therapist.

We are pleased to announce we have found a wonderful replacement to fill Becky’s shoes.  We are happy to introduce our new office manager, Heather. She will take the reins to support Body Logic’s growth and the excellent care provided to the Virginia Beach community.  Heather is a native of Jamestown, New York and has past experience working alongside a chiropractor in Maryland.  She is a mother to one son, and is excited to receive the honorable badge of becoming a grandmother this coming summer. As a Sandbridge local, she loves being outdoors- hiking, backpacking and connecting with nature.  She is a big believer in finding alternative ways of bettering your health that are less invasive and more natural. We are excited to have Heather join our team and for all of you to meet her!

Keeping Your Hips Happy!

Some of you may not know this… Dr. Amanda will be running the Shamrock Half Marathon on March 22nd.  In honor of her ambitions, we dedicate this month’s newsletter education to the body region that has been the most challenging for her while training… the hips!

“My goal is to finish a half marathon after having kids.  I ran the Flying Pirate half marathon in the OBX 7 years ago.  It was my first half marathon, and I quickly said it would be my last!  And then I had kids… followed by a strong desire to get my body back to the physical shape I was in prior to having kids.  Nate is 2 ½ years old and I’m ready to do this.  The satisfaction of completion is just around the corner, I can feel it.  And I can also feel every mile in my hips.  The aching and gnawing feeling just comes to life at night when I’m trying to relax.  I never felt that type of pain prior to having kids!  But I’m moving forward with my training successfully and I’m looking forward to crossing the finish line.  Included in this newsletter are some tips on what I’ve done for self-care to improve recovery and reduce the discomfort.  Good luck to all the runners… I’ll see you out there!” – Dr. Amanda

Stretching/Yoga

Stretching is an absolute must… for everyone!  But particularly for the running community.  In today’s world, we do a lot of sitting: hips flexed, knees bent, and (often) a slumped posture through the shoulders.  After prolonged sitting, the muscles become accustomed to their position.  This is exactly why when you first stand up you feel stiff.  It is difficult for the body to straighten to an erect posture and can take a few steps before you actually feel upright.  One of the muscles responsible for hip stabilization (keeping your hips square under your torso) is the piriformis muscle.  The piriformis muscle gets weak from excessive sitting. And, in contrast, gets strong, but TIGHT from running.  Although Dr. Amanda has done a lot of different stretches while training, the piriformis stretch has been a staple for helping her hips work through changing from weak to strong and combating the tightness from running.  Doing yoga throughout your training can bring you additional benefit.  Simple stretching is a great way to loosen the muscles, but yoga’s incorporation of a focus on breathing takes it to a whole new level.

Strengthening

One of the biggest mistakes we make when starting an exercise routine is that we go big too quickly.  If you don’t start small, injury is likely to occur.  Hip stabilization exercises are another absolute must to get the proper muscles stronger to perform in an endurance activity, like training for a half marathon.  But it’s important to keep this in mind for the average or de-conditioned person as well.  If you haven’t been exercising regularly, don’t expect to walk 3 miles and feel good.  It’s going to hurt!  Because the muscles that are responsible for hip stabilization are not prepared to work for that length of time.  Small strengthening exercises make the big goals doable.  Here is one of Dr. Amanda’s favorite strengthening exercises for hip stabilization.

Massage

Massage has many benefits for many different reasons.  Returning to running reminded me of muscles Dr. Amanda hadn’t felt in a long time.  She had 3 massages over 3-4 weeks to address those sore muscles.  She was getting comfortable with running 3-4 miles, 3 times per week when she scheduled the massages.  For people that are not natural runners, developing the endurance is challenging when working through the soreness.  The massages improve blood flow through the tight muscles, including areas that are difficult to stretch.  The increase in blood flow brings additional cells that help heal the microtrauma that occurs from pounding the pavement.  It also helps circulate waste out of the muscles like lactic acid.  Dr. Amanda is looking forward to her post-race sports massage!  The stretching incorporated in a sports massage will facilitate recovery and reduce inflammation by circulating the blood better through those sore muscles.

Foam Rolling

Throughout the weeks since getting the massages, Dr. Amanda uses a foam roller 2+ times per week.  It’s a staple in their living room at home!  Foam rolling can be incredibly beneficial to address fascial adhesions that develop as your feet continuously strike the ground.  I roll all 4 sides of the thighs- quadriceps and hip flexors, hamstrings and gluteal muscles, the adductors on the inside, and the abductors and IT Band on the outside.

Water

Generally speaking, hydration is very important for people.  Hydration for runners is even more important.  According to Brigham Health, “Maintaining hydration as a runner is important for health and performance. Water regulates our body temperature, removes waste, helps brings energy to our cells, and cushions our joints. Adequate hydration can improve recovery, minimize injury and cramping, and maximize performance.”  The easiest way to remember how much water to drink in a day is to divide your weight in half.  This equals the number of ounces of water you should drink everyday for the average person.  For the runner, depending on your mileage, you need to increase the amount of water that you drink to restore what was lost in exercise.  And don’t be mistaken, nothing replaces water.  You may enhance it with some additional electrolytes, but it must be water.

Nutritional Supplementation

The nutrient and mineral requirements for the body are barely being met for the average person by today’s food standards.  Our vegetables don’t contain the minerals they once did and our animal protein is being tainted with antibiotics and preservatives our body’s have to process.  Nutritional supplementation of some degree is becoming essential.  For the runner, this couldn’t be more true.  B-vitamins and minerals help support energy production and muscle contraction, respectively.  Omega-3 fatty acids and incredible herbs like Boswellia serrata and turmeric help combat inflammation that comes with putting out the miles.  Dr. Amanda is a big fan of Standard Process and MediHerb supplements.  The whole food nutrition component coupled with the guarantee of high quality just can’t be beat.  Depending on the phase of training and her general health, Dr. Amanda will adapt her regimen to support her body where it needs it most.  Just ask if you want to learn more!

ASEA

As you may have noticed, we’ve begun promoting a product line by ASEA that contains Redox Signaling Molecules.  The purpose of increasing your availability of these amazing molecules is that it promotes cellular healing.  Besides improving recovery time, Dr. Amanda has also experienced improved sleep, better digestion, and increased energy… even with the additional stress of running more than she has in 7 years!  Additionally, Dr. Amanda had a faster recovery time when she was sick about two-thirds of the way through her training.  “I genuinely doubt I would have recovered as quickly from the cold/sinus congestion I developed in the middle of February.  I was amazed at how quickly I could return to running a longer distance.  In the past, I would struggle if I had to take a week off from training.  Trying to return to the road was tough.  Not this time!  It was great!”  If you want to learn more about ASEA, check out this month’s class on Tuesday, March 10th at 5:30pm.  Click here to sign up!  For even more information, check out our ASEA site.
