If you read our May newsletter you saw the article on Massage Rooms Etiquette you read about what to expect before a massage, this article is about what to expect after!
There are many reasons why someone might schedule a massage, such as to facilitate recovery from an injury, keep away those pesky headaches, preparing for a race, or to just simply relax. The massage itself can vary from relaxing to intense depending on its purpose. But when all is said and done, it’s the results of the massage that drive the decision to get a one in the first place. Our talented Body Logic Massage Therapists will do their best to help accomplish the desired result. They will also take time to educate our clients on what to expect after a massage so there are few surprises. Prior to creating this article we asked our beloved massage therapists what they often discuss with clients… here’s what they had to say!
Muscle soreness- this is an expected side effect of massage for many clients. Through the use of different techniques, massage manipulates the muscles into working in their proper movement patterns. Especially if the muscles have been “stuck” and not working properly, it can take time for the body to accept the changes and soreness may be present.
Mild dehydration- as a massage takes place fluid gets moved from the muscles into the circulatory system, which is helpful for the removal of toxins that may be stored in the body’s fat and muscles. However, it results in mild dehydration. It is highly encouraged to drink plenty of water after a massage. Water is the best way to reestablish hydration in the muscles, not coffee, tea, soda, or other beverages. Good ol’ water does the trick!
Lightheaded- in some occasions a client can experience feelings of being light headed, typically right after massage. One reason is that massage can lower blood pressure and, upon standing, the body has to adapt to ensure adequate blood is reaching the brain. For some people, it can take a few seconds longer resulting in being momentarily lightheaded. It is advised to sit up slowly after a massage an take a few moments before getting off the table to be preventative.
Improved range-of-motion- as the muscles are loosened up by massage, it allows the joints to loosen as well. Although a client might feel GREAT after a massage because (s)he has increased active range of motion, it is advised to avoid strenuous exercise or excessive stretching after a massage to prevent injury. Body Logic massage therapists will often give guidance on what stretches are recommended that are safe to perform after massage.
More relaxed physically and mentally- this is one of the best results of massage in our opinion! Many of us are guilty of leading extremely busy lives. Slowing down and receiving quality bodywork is good for the body and the mind. Some clients even fall asleep, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Taking time to relax can in turn be rejuvenating and help you take on the next challenging task that life brings.
Light meal afterwards- sometimes it will be advised to have a healthy and light bite to eat after a massage. Quality food can provide the raw materials our muscles need to recover from massage. It also helps increase blood sugar levels to provide the energy needed to perform daily tasks that may be necessary after your massage.
As always, communication is key when it comes to massage. If you have any questions regarding your post-massage expectations, please don’t hesitate to speak with your massage therapist. We are here to help you move better, feel better, and live better!
