Back to the Basics: Chiropractic

“Back pain remains one of the most prevalent and disabling conditions worldwide. It is one of the most common reasons that patients visit their doctors, and one of the most common conditions for which doctors prescribe pain medications. It is estimated that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. In addition, with the overuse and abuse of prescription opioid painkillers in the United States still a major public health issue, it’s essential for health care consumers to understand that spinal manipulation and other conservative treatments can treat common musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain effectively and safely.” – American Chiropractic Association, 2017

In honor of National Chiropractic Month, we’re breaking down the basics of a chiropractor’s background and what to expect regarding evaluation and treatment. Chiropractors are physicians that practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and the effects of these disorders on general health. As licensed doctors, chiropractors are able to assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing and advanced imaging, and other tools needed to diagnose a patient’s condition. Often referred to as portal-of-entry physicians, most people can schedule to be seen by a chiropractor without the need for a referral.

Although there are many different treatment methods when performing chiropractic care, the end goal is the same: improving joint mobility and reducing nerve irritation of the spine or other joints of the body. Did you know that chiropractors are capable of treating other joints in the body such as knees, hips, and shoulders? The chiropractor’s comprehensive education in the fields of anatomy and physiology is all-encompassing.  For more information about chiropractic education, click here.

Chiropractors first perform a comprehensive examination of the area of complaint and areas that may be associated with the presenting condition. For example, if a patient complains of neck pain the neck will be evaluated as well as the rest of the spine, the head, and the arms. If necessary, a patient will be referred for imaging to perform further evaluation. If additional testing is not necessary, a diagnosis is determined and initial treatment can be performed. The chiropractor will develop a treatment plan for the best course of action to reduce pain, restore joint mobility, and prevent future exacerbation of the condition.
